Glazed Lemon Pound Cake With Bisquick

It is a known fact that I am a Bisquick girl who enjoys finding a variety of creative ways to use her big yellow box and now one of my favorite bakery treats can be made with my box of Bisquick

Glazed Lemon Pound Cake
from: Bisquick/Betty Crocker

Ingredients

Cake
2 1/2 cups Original Bisquick® mix
2/3 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted
3 eggs
3/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 tablespoons grated lemon peel (fresh is best)
Glaze
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice

 Instructions:
  1.  Heat oven to 325°F. Spray bottom only of 9x5-inch loaf pan with baking spray with flour. In large bowl, beat all cake ingredients except lemon peel with electric mixer on low speed 30 seconds, scraping bowl constantly. Beat on medium speed 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Stir in lemon peel. Pour into pan.
  2.  Bake 45 to 50 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes. Loosen sides of cake from pan with metal spatula. Remove cake from pan to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 1 hour.
  3.  In small bowl, mix powdered sugar and lemon juice with spoon until smooth. Drizzle glaze over cake.

The Empty Candy Bar Wrapper

It was a Sunday morning and Nate was rehearsing his memory verse over and over again so that he was ready to share it with his Children’s church director. He had it down and was fully prepared .

Off to church we went memory verse in our heads and bibles in our hands – I dropped off the boys to their class with a quick hug and Ill see you after church reminder.

An hour later I arrived to pick my boys up and as we exited I asked Nate if he had recited his memory verse today? He responded by handing me a Butterfinger candy bar wrapper in which he replied "yes, and I saved you the wrapper as a souvenir of the candy bar I was given and now is in my tummy.

First I laughed thinking he actually saved me the wrapper as a souvenir -then I thought how this wrapper was actually a great reminder of not only had Nate absorbed a candy bar into his body today but he has also absorbed the word of God into his heart today .

As a mom I want my children to daily absorb God’s word into their heats and I'd be happy to collect empty candy bar wrappers as souvenirs if it means they are filling up on God’s word.

Chalkboard Verses

Each Sunday my children would arrive out of their Children's church service with a slip of paper that had their memory verse on it. Many times these papers would get stuffed into their bibles, left on the car floor or misplaced in some pile in our home, only causing us to go on a hunt to find the memory verse they needed to learn.  Not any longer I came up with a simple way to help my boys keep track of their memory verse and it also is a daily help to memorizing it.

I purchased an inexpensive framed chalkboard that now sits on our kitchen counter in which we write the verse on that we are working on that week for our children to read, memorize and think about each day.

Another idea would be to use a hanging chalkboard or white board in a place your children can view it easily.

You can purchase a frame and chalkboard at local craft stores or online search for framed chalk boards.

Time to Plant Halloween Pumpkins?

Growing pumpkins in the garden can be a lot of fun, especially for children who may use them for carving their jack-o-lanterns at Halloween. But, as many gardeners know, successfully growing pumpkins in the garden for Halloween pumpkins can be difficult to do. With a few pumpkin growing tips, you can grow perfect Halloween pumpkins in your garden.

Halloween Pumpkin Growing Tip #1 – Plant at the right time
Many gardeners will tell you that growing pumpkins is easy. It is keeping the pumpkins from rotting before Halloween that is hard. Mature pumpkins will rot quickly, so it is important to make sure your pumpkin is ripe right at Halloween. The best time for planting pumpkins depends on the variety and your climate. Normally, in the North, you should be planting pumpkins in mid to late May. In warmer, Southern climates (where pumpkins grow rapidly), you should probably be planting pumpkins in June.

Halloween Pumpkin Growing Tip #2 – Give your pumpkin lots of room
Growing pumpkins requires a lot of room. Many pumpkin plants can grow to be 30 to 40 feet long. If you don’t provide enough room for your pumpkin plant, you may cause it to shade and weaken itself, which makes the plant more susceptible to disease and pests.

Halloween Pumpkin Growing Tip #3 – Pumpkins love sunshine
Plant your pumpkins where they will get lots of sun. The more the better.

Halloween Pumpkin Growing Tip #4 – Pumpkins love water
While growing pumpkins will tolerate some drought, it is best to make sure that they get regular watering. Make sure your pumpkin plants get 2 – 4 inches of water a week. Supplement with the hose if you are not getting this much rainfall.

Halloween Pumpkin Growing Tip #5 – Plant your Pumpkins with Companions
Squash bugs are the #1 killers of pumpkin vines. To help repel them from your pumpkin plant, plant some companion plants near your pumpkin plant. Catnip, radishes, nasturtiums, marigolds, petunias and mint are all plants that squash bugs do not like and will keep squash bugs from the growing pumpkins.

Halloween Pumpkin Growing Tip #6 – Keep the Stem
When you harvest your pumpkin plant, make sure you leave a good, long piece of the stem on the pumpkin. Once you cut potential Halloween pumpkins from the vine, a “handle” or stem will help slow the rotting process.

Conclusion
With these pumpkin growing tips, you should have a much better chance of growing all the Halloween pumpkins you could want. Remember also, not only is growing pumpkins fun, but after Halloween, they make a great addition for your compost pile.

End Of The School Year Celebration Ideas

My Mom reputation has become the MOM who thinks school gets in her way for Family Fun  -which is why so I am so ready to begin celebrating the end of the school year and welcome my kids home to SUMMER VACATION. Last week on 24/7 MOMS Live webcast we shared the below ideas with our mom viewers to help them celebrate the end of the school year.

Remember these are IDEAS do not run out and overwhelm yourself trying to pull these all off. Try one or two of them and add some fun as your kids end their school year.

 Counting The Days

Countdown Calendar: Make a big calendar to hang on the wall for the last month of school. Have your child write down things she wants to do when school is over and then add some of those very things into the calendar and show her that school days and fun days don't have to be separate.

At School Celebrations

Decorated lunch bag – on the last day of school decorate a paper sack with markers saying things like "Last lunch of the year" - "Happy Last day of 4th grade" you could even use a colored handle gift bag and use ribbon to keep it closed.

T-Shirt fun - create a last day of school T-shirt that their friends can sign using fabric markers. You could even doll it up with iron on transfers that you place pictures from the year on or cute sayings.

Book Signing- Purchase either Dr. Seuss " oh, the places you will go" or Curious George " On your way" books and have your Children's teacher sign it each year until they graduate from high school then present it to them as a keepsake from their school years. ( You can start this tradition at any grade).
Letter From Teachers - Ask each of your children's teachers to write your child a letter at the end of the school year.  This is great for scrap booking or keeping for your child's graduation.

Picture Time: Give your children disposable cameras and allow them to take pictures of their last day of school activities and friends.
Pick-Up Fun:  Arrive at school with your car all decorated with balloons, fun messages written on your windows what a fun greeting as your kids arrive into the parking lot.

At The Bus Stop Celebrations

Celebrate by greeting kids with Balloons, Popsicles etc when they walk off the bus.

At Home Celebrations

1. Mom and Me
Take your daughters for Pedicures
Take kids out for ice cream either right after school or dinner
Go shopping for swim suits or even flip flops/sandals
Go out for a movie, or putt putt golf
SURPRISE – treat them each year to a fun “school’s out” activity. Give them clues before leaving home. (I.E.-Movie, putt golf, local activity part, laser tag, Chuckie Cheese) Change up each year for an added surprise, invite friends.

2. Kick off the Summer Party
Host a neighborhood or friend party (send out summer themed invites such as on beach balls or message in a bottle)
 - Water gun fight and balloons
- Rent a jumpy house and serve simple food
- Outdoor treasure hunt
- Musical beach blankets
- Limbo

Gi    3.  “Celebration” Gifts (stuff you will buy anyways)

Beach bag filled or beach towel with items tied to it
Reusable water bottle for summer
Flip flops
Sunglasses, sunscreen or lipstick with spf 15 or higher
Gift card to McDonalds or bookstore
Spa kits for DIY night (Do It Yourself)
Bubbles for younger ones or sidewalk chalk.
Beach towels
New swim suits
games
Water toys
Kiddie pools
Life vests
Beach bags / re-usable totes

Gift Card Bouquet – great for teens and put cards from places they will be going all summer  such as coffee shops, fast food, movies etc.

MOM I'm Bored Jar – Create a jar filled with ideas to do this summer that are free, fun and creative

4. Picnic Celebration

Picnic at local park
If all else fails –picnic in the backyard

5. HOME SWEET HOME
Have graduation theme music playing when they arrive home
Make a sign that says welcome home (grader); put the grade they will be entering in the fall
Family MOVIE night- bring TV outside and have a home “drive in”
Sleepover outside under the stars.
Kids Choice Dinner – What they want to eat and where to eat it

6. Summer Reading Fun
Take kids to library check out books for free and get them a card if they don’t have one
Go to half price books or thrift store to purchase used books
Take kids to local bookstore and purchase a NEW summer reading book
Don’t forget magazines, comic books or crossword puzzles for FUN reads.

7. Special Eats/Treats
Special Breakfast in the AM smoothies etc
Make homemade ice cream or Popsicles
Sno cones
Eat “grad hats”- mini peanut butter cup, top with chocolate graham cracker and add fruit leather as tassel
Make favorite summer lunch/dinner (hot dogs, hamburgers and s’mores)
Special dinner - decorate table (celebration style) and serve special dessert
Serve chocolate dipped strawberries, fresh fruit salad or fruit kabobs
Bake favorite cookies and serve fresh out of the oven.

8. Backyard Surprise
Create SPA experience, lounge chairs, water with lemons
Set up badminton, crochet or other favorite outdoor game
Set up slip and slide, squirt guns or water experience
Decorate party style with balloons, streamers and cake
Reorganize the backyard with new outdoor toys (check thrift stores).

9. Morning After- celebrate the first day off from school
PJ day- stay in jammies all day
Eat sugary cereal
Throw or put away all items that resemble school (papers, lunch boxes, school clothes)
Go out for a morning breakfast or brunch
Drag out summer clothes
Rearrange bedroom- give it a new feel
Celebrate “extended bedtime” (I.E. move bedtime 15 mins. to 1 hour).

Kids Can Help with Family Cleaning

by Trisha

Recently, while on a mother-daughter trip with my oldest daughter, she nicely informed me it was time that the two youngest members of our family take on a few more family chores. Her reasoning was that they were getting older and were very capable of doing more if we would teach them. I got to thinking about her suggestion and I realized I had not been teaching them as I had the older three. She was right – it was time to teach the next two in line.

As I mentioned in Tips for Delegating, I needed to start delegating more of the chores around the house, so I created a list of chores that our kids can do working alongside us as we begin the training process.

Click here to read Trisha's example of the chores you can delegate over at SC Johnson

Extreme Couponing: The “Real” Effect

Amy Hannold,
247Moms Frugal Living Editor

In my smaller home town and in big cities across the country, the eye-popping, popular program “Extreme Couponing” is having an effect on couponing now – and in the future.

TLC’s “Extreme Couponing” focuses on sensational purchases, including multiple items of little nutritional value.  Its goal is to entertain, not enlighten.  “Extreme Couponing” is not “Real” couponing.  Most “Real” couponers are trying to keep their home cupboards full; they’re generous, considerate neighbors helping neighbors.  Maybe “saving money” and “Frugality” is more hip now, but we down-to-earth folks have a new stereotype to contend with.

“Real” couponers predicted stores would be changing their coupon policies. Grocers and drugstores retain only a small profit margin from what they sell.  It’s understandable (but unfortunate) that they might answer this storm of couponing bliss by changing their coupon policies.

What is the best, vital move now for the “Real Couponers” community?  Those of us, no matter where we are on the “couponing scale”, need to be advocating that couponers be “real” (as in reasonable) to preserve couponing as a money-saving option. “Extreme Couponing”, the program, will hopefully become redundant enough that it goes away.  In the mean time here are my “Values of a Real Couponer”.   My hope is that you’ll share them, so that couponing, while riding the “extreme” tide, comes out clean and still a viable money-saving option on the other side:

Hometown Help:
I know that “how-to” is not as sensational enough for cable, so if you have the skills, and use them prudently – please share them with someone who could benefit.  Offer to host a class, couponing club (with tools and coupons shared/provided), or simply practice “RAOCK’s” (Random Acts of Coupon Kindnesses) – share coupons with your fellow shoppers.  You’d be blessed with valuable friends when you demonstrate saving money to others.
Just Say No to Clearing Shelves:  What amount of product to you need, really?  If you want lots, place a special order, if possible.  Consider that shoppers like yourselves are also making the effort to get to the good deal , so be nice.

Don’t Try to Fool the System:  Retailers are now implementing “smarter” systems to avoid losing big bucks due to coupon fraud.  Manufactures rightfully refuse to reimburse retailers when shoppers have not purchased the coupon-specified product.  Coupon abuse by shoppers leads to higher prices down the road – for the crooks too!  Coupon fraud is against the law, and it’s not worth your smarts!
Don’t Do This:  We’re adults here, right?  Let’s not forget that the people around us are watching for how we operate – it does affect how couponers are encountered in the future.  Please, no pushing or shoving.  Stealing is out too, including from the tear-pads or items from your neighbor’s cart – don’t do it.  Yelling, criticizing, or other uncalled for verbal abuse of store employees also looks bad for all of us.

Keep Couponing “Real” and valuable:  Make friends at the Customer Service desks, they’re really our best allies.   Do your best to be informed of policies as they change.  If you doubt a coupon to be legit, you can go to www.cents-off.com for a list of current fraudulent coupons.

DIY Birthday Plate

Make your Own Family Birthday Plate!

  By Leslie Pleasants

Everyone has a birthday in your family so why not make it just a little bit more special with a tradition. Make a Birthday Plate that you bring out any time someone has a birthday. Whoever's birthday it is that person gets to eat off of that plate. If you want to make a plate for each person in the family you can do that too and personalize it with their name.

Materials:

Ceramic Plate
Porcelaine brand ceramic paint
(pens or brush on)
*if you use a brand other then Porcelaine make sure its
non-toxic and dishwasher safe

Make sure you wash the plate and take off any stickers. Completely dry. Now you can use stencils or freehand you design. You might be a scrapbooker and already have a cupcake stencil or have a cricut and make a stencil or purchase one from the store. This doesn't have to be perfect so you can make it your own.

Some ideas:

Balloons
Cupcake
Cake
Candles
"Happy Birthday!"
"It's Your Day!"
Present

Remember you have the middle of the plate to decorate but you can also decorate the edge of the plate too!

Directions:

Follow the directions on the paint. You might need a second coat. Let the first coat dry first before applying the second coat though. Until the plate is baked you can fix any mistakes you made by washing them off. Or you can use a Q-tip.

In order for these plates to be used with food, the plates MUST be baked following the manufactures directions on the label. These plates will last for years and years. Even through the dishwasher!!
